The calculator deliberately gives no time frame. How long a step takes depends on training age, frequency, technique, injuries and what routes are available — there is no solid data on it.

What the grade pyramid is

The grade pyramid describes how your ascents should be spread across the grades so that a new grade does not rest on a single lucky hit. At the top sits the goal with one ascent, and below it the levels with progressively more ascents. Read from the bottom up: width first, then the tip.

The basic idea is simple. A single boulder at the target grade may fit your strengths exactly — a badly set grade, a hold that suits you, a day with good conditions. Eight ascents two levels below cannot be explained by chance. So the pyramid does not measure what worked once, but what you can do reliably.

Where the numbers come from

The idea was formulated by Dale Goddard and Udo Neumann in 1993 in Performance Rock Climbing: improvement progresses best when the difficulties of the routes already climbed form a stable pyramid. That is a statement from experience, not a measurement — and it does not yet contain any counts.

The best-known sequence is 8 – 4 – 2 – 1, that is a doubling with each step down. Power Company Climbing attributes it to Eric Hörst’s training books and names twelve months as the window over which the counting is done. The Front Climbing Club describes the same sequence as a ratio of two to one between adjacent levels and recommends setting the base at a grade you climb reliably. Touchstone Climbing shows a wider variant with eight, six, four, two and one ascent.

So the numbers diverge — and that is the real finding. In a later post Power Company Climbing expressly advises against fixed ratios and considers the variety of ascents more important than their number: the further a level sits below the goal, the more different the routes should be. Coach Jesse Firestone gives no universally valid numbers at all, because they depend on the routes available, on motivation and on conditions; he recommends starting small and readjusting the pyramid every season.

That is why the calculator offers three shapes and not one “correct” one. Take them as a framework, not as a rule.

Why there is no time estimate here

The most common question put to a goal calculator is: how long will this take? There is no honest answer to that. What circulates online are individual accounts — someone climbed their first 7a after four years, someone else after one. No average can be built from that, because nobody also recorded the starting point, the training frequency and the injuries along the way.

Putting out a number of weeks would be technically easy and factually invented. The calculator therefore counts ascents. You can influence those, and they tell you at any time how far along you are.

How to use the plan

Only count ascents from the last twelve months. What lies two years back says little about your form today. Count everything you climbed cleanly — on lead, on second or as a boulder from bottom to top, depending on which discipline you are currently planning.

At the base, aim for variety rather than repetition. Eight routes on the same wall angle with the same hold types do fill the row, but they prepare you badly for a project that looks exactly the opposite. Steep and slabby, edges and slopers, power and technique — the width of the base is meant literally.

And treat the result as movable. If the pyramid fills faster than expected, set the goal higher instead of working through the list. If it stalls, the target grade may be one step too high.

Frequently asked questions

How many routes do I need for the next climbing grade?
There is no evidenced number. The most widespread rule of thumb is the grade pyramid with eight ascents at the base, four one step above, two above that and one at the target grade. Other coaches work with a wider base of eight, six, four, two and one ascent, or drop fixed counts altogether. The numbers come from coaching practice, not from a controlled study.
When am I allowed to try a grade higher?
The idea behind the pyramid is not to forbid the higher grade, but to keep an eye on the proportions. If you are stuck on a project and there is barely anything underneath it, the foundation is missing. If, on the other hand, the step below your goal is well filled, there is nothing against working on the next grade in parallel. Several coaches expressly recommend adjusting the pyramid within a season rather than sticking rigidly to a template.
How long does it take to move up a grade?
This calculator deliberately gives no answer to that. Published figures on the time it takes to reach a particular grade are individual accounts, not collected averages. Training age, training frequency, technique, injuries and the routes your gym offers have such a strong effect that any number of weeks would be false precision.
Do boulders and roped routes count together?
No. Bouldering and roped climbing scales measure different demands and cannot be converted into one another. Keep a separate pyramid for each. That is why the calculator separates the disciplines from the outset.
Is the grade pyramid scientifically proven?
No. It is a coaching heuristic. Dale Goddard and Udo Neumann formulated it in Performance Rock Climbing in 1993 as an observation from experience: improvement progresses best when the difficulties of the routes already climbed form a stable pyramid. No study testing the specific counts has been published. The value of the pyramid lies in making volume and variety visible — not in predicting a date.
